Business Day
For seven months of the 2010-2011 school year, 1st-6th grade students received Technology Training in
two forty-five minute sessions each month. The goal of Granite's
Instructional Technology Department was to reach as many students as possible
and give them expert instruction in keyboarding skills, Internet usage, and
experience with many kinds of software and online learning sites. The
older students were given the task of putting what they had learned throughout
the year into practice by creating businesses that would be part of
"Business Day".
Students were divided into groups consisting of 6-8 team members. Together, they learned the rewards and challenges of teamwork, collaboration, cooperative learning, and many other important life skills. They used several software programs, including Word, KidPix, and Comic Life. They studied keyboarding and explored many online sites that offered different kinds of problem-solving strategies. Students were also given important information about Internet Safety and how to use the World Wide Web more effectively by implementing Boolean Searches.
The students created business Displays and Commercials that would later be viewed by peers, teachers, and members of the community. They produced displays that included a Business Name, a Slogan, a Logo, a Business Mission Statement, and a Product and Price list that represented their business's best interests. They created, filmed, and edited their Business Commercials using the Flip Camera and related software.
The 1st and 2nd grade students received training in Economics and Consumerism. They learned what it meant to be a "Smart Consumer" which helped them become a vital part of the Business Day. Their task was to seek out the best business displays produced by the 3rd-6th grade students and reward them accordingly.
All 1st-6th grade students, as well as teachers, administrators, and parents were given five tickets that they could use as "money" to show support for favorite businesses. Grade level businesses receiving the most tickets throughout Business Day AND completing all of the display and commercial requirements will receive a special award.
This was the first year for our Business Day and all those who participated deemed it a huge success. The students have all worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of all they've accomplished.
